Criminal Justice

The Issue

End Mass Incarceration. Invest in Communities.

The United States incarcerates more people than any nation on Earth. One in every 150 Americans is behind bars. Decades of tough-on-crime politics have destroyed families, gutted communities, and produced no measurable improvement in public safety. True safety comes from investment, not incarceration.

Our Promises

  • End federal mandatory minimum sentencing, eliminate cash bail for nonviolent offenses, and dramatically reduce the federal prison population by prioritizing rehabilitation, mental health treatment, and drug courts over incarceration

  • Legalize marijuana at the federal level, expunge prior convictions, and reinvest cannabis tax revenue into the communities most harmed by the War on Drugs

  • Abolish private, for-profit prisons and immigration detention facilities and redirect those resources toward reentry programs, job training, housing assistance, and mental health services for formerly incarcerated people

  • Establish strong federal standards for police accountability, including mandatory body cameras, independent oversight boards, and a national use-of-force standard rooted in de-escalation and the preservation of human life

  • Attack the root causes of crime by investing in quality public schools, stable housing, living-wage jobs, and accessible mental health care

  • Pass universal background checks, ban assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines, enact a federal red flag law, repeal the PLCAA, and invest in community-based violence interruption programs as a proven, non-carceral approach to reducing gun violence in districts
